There is a yacht club, local sailing, boat-hire, fishing trips, lovely coastline, cliff top and woodland walks. The local pubs are friendly and offer good food. The shops, including a Post Office, butcher and a dispensing chemist, home baked bread and cakes, are well stocked and sometimes stay open late. There are many more restaurants, a fish'n chip shop and more pubs in the South Hams.
At the mouth of the Yealm is the Mewstone - a huge rocky grassy outcrop, sharply sloping to seaward. It helps to break up the force of the sea, thus giving protection for boats entering the Yealm harbour, affording safe anchorage and moorings, the whole administered by the River Yealm Harbour Authority.
